Pop even sings some of the album’s tracks in French! This album has a heavy New Orleans vibe influenced by iconic jazz greats Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong, very unlike the rock, punk and pop music fans were used to hearing. Perhaps the most bizarre of all albums Iggy Pop had ever written and released, 2009’s Préliminaires was inspired by the performer’s reading of Michel Houellebecq’s novel La Possibilité d’une Île (The Possibility of an Island). Pop has always been a fan of collaborating. Three songs on the album were co-written by ex- Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones, too. Blah-Blah-Blah also marked the final collaboration between long-time music partner David Bowie, who co-wrote most of the songs on the album. The album’s single Real Wild Child (Wild One) was a Pop take on Johnny O’Keefe’s 1958 single Wild One. The change of scenery worked in Pop’s favour, though despite its genre digression, Blah-Blah-Blah became one of the performer’s most successful releases. With Blah-Blah-Blah, Pop surprised fans with what sounded more like a cheesy film soundtrack than the iconic punk releases people were used to hearing and came to expect. Sister Midnight, China Girl and Nightclubbing were the album’s major releases, and have also been resuscitated by people wanting to breath new life into old favourites. Nonetheless, The Idiot paved the way for Pop to make himself known as an entity outside of The Stooges his genius validated to those who thought that perhaps he was merely a frontman and couldn’t quite make it in the world of solo performances. The intensity of Raw Power is captivating and saw Pop go from a humble lead singer to a punk icon.ġ977 was a big year for Pop, with the release of his first solo record The Idiot closely followed by his sophomore Lust For Life. With production credit going to none other than David Bowie, The Idiot has been subject to heavy debate by Iggy Pop purists who believe that the album was unrepresentative of the larger Pop repertoire due to its heavy Bowie flavours. The album was the band’s first foray into a more anthemic flavour the ferocity of Search and Destroy, Gimme Danger and Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell confirm Pop’s fluidity as a frontman, performer and musician. Both of these songs were minor hits, so Blah Blah Blah succeeded on its obviously commercial terms, but that doesn't change the fact it's one of Iggy's least interesting albums, and has dated worse than almost anything he's ever recorded. The third studio release for The Stooges and the first under the moniker Iggy and The Stooges, 1973’s Raw Power has since gained a cult following as a harbinger of punk rock after it failed to receive the commercial success that the band had originally anticipated. And in the four years since Zombie Birdhouse, Iggy hadn't come up with much in the way of material the only truly memorable tracks are "Real Wild Child (Wild One)," a neat bit of electro-processed rockabilly (previously a hit for Australian rocker Johnny O'Keefe), and the moody "Cry for Love," co-written by former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones. In the liner notes, a member of Duran Duran is thanked for the loan of a drum machine, and that speaks volumes about the production Blah Blah Blah is slick in a very '80s way, dominated by preprogrammed percussion and swirling keyboards. Like The Idiot, Blah Blah Blah was heavily influenced by Bowie's input however, while The Idiot was made by a man creating intelligent and ambitious art rock, Blah Blah Blah is the work of a popmeister looking for hits and not afraid to sound cheesy about it. David Bowie offered to help, and together they came up with Blah Blah Blah, the most calculatedly commercial album of Iggy's career. Wisely realizing he was running out of second chances, Iggy decided to make the most of his good fortune he steered clear of drugs, learned to cook his own meals, started putting money in the bank, and used his savings to bankroll a new album. Bowie recorded "China Girl," a song Bowie and Pop co-wrote, for his album Let's Dance, earning Iggy some large (and much-needed) royalty checks. In 1983, Iggy Pop's career was in shambles, but an unexpected windfall arrived thanks to Iggy's frequent benefactor David Bowie.
